Mentoring In Medicine Creates National Mentoring In Medicine Day To Encourage Minority Students To Explore Careers In Healthcare.

Over the past seven years, Mentoring in Medicine, Inc. has held National Mentoring in Medicine Conferences as a means to promote awareness to the CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF MINORITIES IN THE HEALTHCARE FIELD. This year, they have partnered with Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, GA, Fredrick Douglas Academy, I in Harlem, NY and Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio. Both schools and hospital will host a National Mentoring in Medicine Day Conference during the month of April.
Students from local grade schools, high schools, and colleges will have the opportunity to meet with practicing healthcare professionals and representatives from health professional schools. Each day will consist of workshops, interactive health career exhibits and lunch with healthcare professionals.
The Mentoring in Medicine conference is being presented in partnership with The Piedmont Hospital, Ohio State University College of Medicine, Frederick Douglass Academy I, National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health, Friends of the National Library of Medicine, www.ExploreHealthCareers.org, Empire State Medical Association, Association of Black Cardiologists, Touro College of Medicine, Bronx Community College and C&G Enterprises.
Each National Mentoring in Medicine Day Conference will feature keynote speeches from notable individuals in the Health Care and Science fields.
Christopher Edmin, PHD, "Professor of Urban Science Education for the Hip-Hop Generation" will be the opening keynote speaker at the Frederick Douglas, I New York Event.
WHY:
There is a critical shortage of minority physicians and other healthcare professionals. According to the American Association of Medical Colleges, while racial and ethnic minorities make up approximately 25 percent of the U.S. population, they make up only six percent of practicing physicians and only 12 percent of U.S. medical school graduates.
WHO:
Mentoring in Medicine is a national nonprofit organization based in New York City. Mentoring in Medicine is dedicated to academic enrichment, leadership development, community service and mentoring urban students interested in pursuing a healthcare profession. The organization offers students hands-on experience in a variety of healthcare occupations through their educational and mentoring programs. In the seven years since its conception, Mentoring in Medicine has developed programs that have reached almost 50,000 students, parents, and professionals. Nearly 800 health care professionals: doctors, dentists, podiatrists, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, researchers, and health administrators, have worked together to assist youth to strategically prepare an educational plan so they can obtain their goal of becoming a health professional, in addition to encouraging healthy living.
