  • Montgomery, AL (1888PressRelease) August 28, 2014 - Walter Cartwright, Director of the Forest Operations Division for The Alabama Forestry Commission, has been selected as an Honored Member of the National Association of Distinguished Professionals.

    Walter Cartwright began his career in forestry after graduating from Auburn University in December 1974 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forest Management. He worked in forest industry for 14 years and state government for 26 years, and now works with The Alabama Forestry Commission as Director of all Forest Operations.

    In his role, Mr. Cartwright oversees fire detection, dispatch, suppression, and prescribed burning. They are the first responders to natural and other disasters, work closely with FEMA and AEMA, and assists with Western Fire details. He also supervises program managers that deliver statewide programs in Stewardship Plan Writing and Implementation, Landowner Assistance, State Lands Management, Forest Inventory and Analysis, Urban and Community Forestry, Forest Health, Invasive Species Control, and Best Management Practices for Forestry that protect water quality and improve water quantity.

    "I have a wide array of forestry experience that has culminated in increasing responsibility of administrative and supervisory work over the past 15 years," Mr. Cartwright said about his experience. "My parents, friends, and colleagues all contribute to my work ethic and drive for excellence in all that I have accomplished, as well as several great mentors."

    Mr. Cartwright hopes to continue making Alabama a better place to live and help landowners understand how forests positively contribute to society. He is currently an Alabama Registered Forester and is past chairman of the Alabama Division of the Society of American Foresters. He's also served on several governors' task forces, including Alabama's Water Resources Assessment, Mobile Bay Aquatic Ecosystem Recovery Plan Coalition, on the Hurricane Ivan Forest Recovery Task Force and Hurricane Katrina Forest Recovery Task Force, and as a committee member of the Tri-State Water Wars for the past 25 years.
