  • Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon, NJ (1888PressRelease) March 04, 2014 - New Jersey's communities continue to face challenges, including stranded assets, changing demographics, aging infrastructure, and the loss of major employers. Those issues and more are on the agenda for NAIOP New Jersey's Public Policy Symposium, slated for Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at The Heldrich in New Brunswick.

New Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32nd District-Bergen and Hudson), who is also a local construction code official, will open the program, offering his perspective on the legislature's 2014 agenda. Key issues include COAH reform, infrastructure investment and planning, job growth, how communities can and should tackle redevelopment and more.

Jeffrey Otteau, president of Otteau Valuation Group and widely respected for his knowledge and insight into real estate trends is slated to provide an overview on the demographic and economic trends that government officials and investors need to know in order to make prudent land use, planning and zoning decisions. Widely quoted by the national media, Otteau has extensive experience working with public officials, developers, corporations and industry professionals.

The program will also feature an interactive discussion moderated by Michael Seeve of Mountain Development Corp. and president of NAIOP New Jersey. Panelists will include Assembly Commerce and Economic Development Committee Chair Gordon Johnson; Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce; Robbinsville Mayor David Fried; Michael Kerwin, CEO of the Somerset County Business Partnership and former Mayor of Somerville; and Mayor Ellen Dickson of Summit. Topics will include the public policy (and attitude) changes needed for communities to meet ongoing challenges facing communities and the vision needed to meet those challenges. Job one will be for New Jersey communities to think "outside the box," focusing on the issues regionally instead of simply within their own municipal borders.

The event will begin with registration and networking at 8 a.m., followed by the program at 8:30, concluding at 11. CEUs are pending for multiple professions. To register, or for more information, contact NAIOP New Jersey at (732) 729-9900, or visit http://www.naiopnj.org/.
