  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) August 28, 2012 - The Adelphi University Exhibitions Program is proud to feature Movement in Gray, a drawing exhibition with dynamic works by Richard Vaux, John Oswald, and Patricia Mamatos. Together these artists explore the natural fluidity, and energy within the artistic process. This inaugural exhibition in the new Adelphi Performing Arts Center (AUPAC) will be on view from September 19 through November 14, 2012. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, October 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Richard Vaux, a native Pennsylvanian, is best known for his atmospheric drawings of his "archetypal" landscapes. With each drawing, there is a new sense of harmony with nature, a coordination and synthesis of the physical and spiritual. Viewers can sense the light and illumination, the visible and the invisible. Vaux received his B.F.A. from Miami University (Ohio) and his M.F.A. from Northern Illinois University. Vaux is professor emeritus from the Department of Art and Art History at Adelphi University. He has called Long Island his home for more than 60 years.

John Oswald, a Long Island artist, creates his drawings with dexterous ease. By manipulating the ground charcoal with his hands on primed masonite, Oswald embraces the repetitive nature of his own fingerprint to develop seemingly organic pieces. He also uses sandpaper and erasers to build layers in every piece, by building, taking away, and blending, the piece evolves organically. Oswald, an Adelphi alumnus, born and bred on Long Island, is also an avid skateboarder, and is newly experimenting with the sport within his artistic process.

Patricia Mamatos, a Long Island native as well, uses obsessive line drawings in graphite to produce symbolic landscapes. The linear repetition of mark creates a labyrinth within each piece. Her controlled method of drawing becomes an uncontrollable abstraction of line. Mamatos, an independent artist, received her bachelor's from SUNY Stony Brook, and her M.F.A. from CUNY Brooklyn College.

Movement in Gray, a collaboration of these three process-oriented artists, is a contemplative study of light, movement, energy, and abstraction. The Performing Arts Center (AUPAC) Gallery is open Sunday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. To learn more about the artists and view glimpses of the exhibition, please visit adelphi.edu/artmuseum/exhibitions/.
