  • (1888PressRelease) November 16, 2011 - Monte De Oro Winery & Vineyard (of Temecula,CA) is delighted to announce that they have won a Double Gold Medal award in the 2011 American Wine Society Commercial Competition (AWS) for their 2008 Vigna Vicini Red Blend.

Entering its 44th year, the American Wine Society is the oldest and largest consumer based wine education organization in North America. Membership is open to the general public and has been established for those who have a keen interest in wines and the wine culture.

The American Wine Society was organized in 1967 as a non-profit, educational, consumer-oriented organization for those interested in learning more about all aspects of wine. On October 7, 1967, a group of some two hundred wine enthusiasts gathered at Dr. Konstantin Frank's vineyard on Keuka Lake near Hammondsport, NY for the AWS' initial meeting.

"Vigna Vicini," or "Vineyard Neighbors" in Italian, derives its name from Monte De Oro's first vineyard Vista Del Monte Vineyard. Planted in the Spring 2002, Vista Del Monte consists of 5.2 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 9.6 acres of Syrah Grapes -the only two grapes that grow on this vineyard, thus being neighbors! Vigna Vicini is comprised of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Syrah.

The two wines comprising this blend were barrel-aged in French & American Oak barrels for 28 months. 20% was aged in brand new French Oak with the remaining 80% being aged in two-to-four year old French Oak to preserve the wonderful fruit characteristics of these two wines. This wine was bottled on March 8, 2011 producing 151 cases.
The 2008 Vigna Vicini offers a bright reflection of deep garnet/scarlet color with a bouquet highlighted by wonderful fruit aromas of wild berries, wild cherries, cherry blossoms accentuated with a moderate, earthy pepper fragrance. With a firm tannic structure, this full bodied wine offers tastes of tart cherries, raspberries, red and black plums, with herbal and earthy flavors of spice, cocoa and chocolate. This wine provides a long, lingering cherry finish with hints of smokiness and spice.

This 100% estate grown wine was handcrafted in limited production specifically for Monte De Oro's Wine Club Program and is being presented to Wine Club Members first before the general public.

Another award recipient is the 2008 Simplexity Red Blend. The 2008 Simplexity was awarded the Silver Medal.

Simplexity is Monte De Oro's first true "meritage" blend consisting of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petite Verdot. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Monte De Oro's Vista Del Monte Vineyard while the Merlot and Cabernet Franc comes from Monte De Oro's DePortola Vineyard. The Petite Verdot component comes from the Fitzpatrick Estate Vineyard in Temecula Valley.

The four wines comprising this blend were barrel-aged in French Oak barrels for 28 months. 65% was aged in brand new French Oak and 35% in two-to-four year old French Oak. This wine was bottled on March 7, 2011 producing 153 cases.
The 2008 Simplexity has a deep, rich, saturated plum color with dark garnet shading at the edge of the glass. The bouquet offers integrated aromas of rich, jammyblack fruit with hints of spice, cinnamon, toasted oak, and lavender. This bouquet is followed by a smooth taste of red fruits (cherry, red currant, and dried cranberries) followed by black fruits (black cherry, blackberry and currant) accentuated with slight tastes of baking spices and licorice. Monte De Oro's 2008 Simplexity provides a dry smooth, medium finish.

We named this wine "Congruity" as this wine has the quality of being congruous and in harmony, offering a point of agreement between the flavors, tannins and finish of the two wines producing this blend.
