  • Detroit, MI (1888PressRelease) October 02, 2012 - The new MIU Men's Health Foundation announces grants of more than $30,000 in support of efforts designed to support research and/or awareness for the treatment of men's health issues.

    William Beaumont Hospital - Royal Oak will receive $25,000 for the establishment and development of its Advanced Diagnostic and Novel Prostate Cancer Therapy Research Program, conducted through William Beaumont's BioBank. The focus of the program will be advanced genetic and prostate cancer research to generate innovative analysis techniques and cutting-edge technologies for early detection of the disease and personalized treatment plans for men throughout Southeast Michigan.

    The Birmingham Community House will receive an annual contribution of $3,000 to assist with the organization's quarterly lecture series providing education and awareness for men's health issues.     MIU Men's Health Foundation also has allocated a yearly scholarship, the Jeff Murri Award, of $1,000 to Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine for a student focusing study on men's health. The award is named in posthumous honor of Jeff Murri, the well-respected vice president and general manager of WJBK-TV FOX 2 Detroit.     The Erectile Dysfunction Foundation (EDF), an internet-based organization, described as the first nationwide advocacy group for erectile dysfunction, will receive $5,000 to support the formation of a new website to provide clear, unbiased information about treatments, resources and developments for erectile dysfunction. The mission of EDF is to educate men about erectile dysfunction and help them find a treatment or cure through education, support, advocacy and research.

    Previously, the MIU Men's Health Foundation also donated $25,000 to fund prostate cancer research and assist patient care with the DaVinci robot at Beaumont Hospital.

    In November 2011, the MIU Men's Health Foundation and its partners coordinated the first-ever free Men's Health Event, providing more than 700 men, even those without health insurance, with free health screenings and information sessions to give them a better understanding of how to stay healthy. On October 6, 2012, the Foundation will host its Men's Health Event at Ford Field to increase the number of men they are able to assist at the event this year.
