  • (1888PressRelease) March 26, 2019 - General Devices (GD) announced that it been awarded the Mobile Tele-Assist System (MTAS) contract for the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson, Mississippi following an RFP selection process. GD will deploy a multi-facetted advanced mobile telemedicine solution that will connect Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers in the region with UMMC and the Mississippi Center for Emergency Services. MTAS will enhance emergency care and communications to improve outcomes and save lives in both urban and rural locals.

The deployment will include both GD e-Bridge™ Mobile Telemedicine and GD CAREpoint Workstations in hospitals, ambulances and deployable units to handle both day-to-day and disaster related medical emergencies. The project will also leverage the FirstNet public safety broadband network for voice, data and mobile telemedicine connectivity.

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Mississippi emergency responders didn’t expect the challenges they would face with communication, a critical aspect in delivering medical care. Since then, the state has created its first comprehensive medical response system to help maintain medical communications for emergency preparedness and response. MTAS is an extension of that and is a game changer that will bring real-time lifesaving capabilities, such as pre-hospital patient data, live video with doctors, EKG sharing and more, right from the touch of their fingers through GD’s HIPAA secure solutions installed on an array of computers and mobile devices.

“Out-of-hospital healthcare is changing. For both rural and urban locals, the emphasis now is providing the right care, at the right place and right time. In the case of time sensitive acute care issues like heart attack, stroke and sepsis, GD e-Bridge Mobile Telemedicine and WorkFLOW team communications shave precious minutes off lifesaving treatment,” said Curt Bashford, GD’s CEO. “Mobile telemedicine and secure, robust networks like FirstNet make this a reality, not in the future, but today. The GD e-Bridge and GD CAREpoint enable simply better care where it is needed most.”

The MTAS project is being led by Dr. Damon Darsey, associate professor of emergency medicine and medical director of the Mississippi Center for Emergency Services. He is a believer in bringing “Jackson to the patient” and has said “technology is the key addition we need to improve emergency care in rural America.”

“GD is honored to be selected and is excited about working with Dr. Darsey and the amazing team at UMMC. Together we are going to do great things for the people of Mississippi and beyond,” added Bashford.
