The Miss Brooklyn pageant, which serves as one of the local preliminaries on the road to the Miss America crown, is a scholarship competition that is open to women ages 18 to 24 and teens ages 13 to 17 who meet the residency requirements of living, working or attending school in the borough of Brooklyn. The only requirement to compete is that each contestant must raise at least $100 for Miss America's official platform, the Children's Miracle Network.

Acosta is also debuting a new title, Miss County Queen, which is an open competition that will draw contestants from all over New York state. Both Miss Brooklyn and Miss County Queen will be crowned on October 9th.

The Miss Brooklyn pageant has had many successful results including Leigh-Taylor Smith (Miss Brooklyn 2008) who went on to become Miss New York and was the Third Runner Up at Miss America. The most recent Miss Brooklyn, Mallory Hagan, and Brooklyn's Outstanding Teen, Joelle Bracco, placed first runner up in their respective divisions at the Miss New York pageant this past June.
