Mini vs. Mustang Marks 50th Anniversary of First Randy Unsbee Undefeated Championship

  • (1888PressRelease) October 07, 2022 - Randy Unsbee of Gresham, OR is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of his first racing wins and championships in a vintage Mini Cooper S at the Velocity Invitational Mini vs. Mustang Enduros, Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca, October 14-17.

    He competed in the inaugural Mini vs. Mustang Enduros last November finishing 15th overall in a field of 30 and is co-driving this year with car owner Christoph Fritsch of Los Gatos, CA in his #35 1962 Mini Cooper S, purchased from David Patton who raced the Mini over the past 10 years in the Midwest. Vintage Mini racer Greg Wold first prepared the car in 1990 and it has competed in over 60 races since then.

    Unsbee scored seven straight wins in 1972 and nine straight in 1973 for two titles as part of the three-car Peterman-Unsbee Race Enterprises (PURE) Mini team in Illinois. His #62 competed at Mini vs. Mustang last year and repeats this October, along with his late brother’s #61.

    In addition to his two Mini Cooper championships, Unsbee has won four SCCA Regional titles and dozens of races in a variety of cars, from Showroom Stock to Sports Racers and Formula 2 over the past 50 years. He also competed in the first professional Formula Ford race at Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI in 1977. He won his first race at age 4 in ¼ midgets.

    Unsbee was reunited with his former championship #62 PURE Mini in 2019 at the 60th Anniversary Mini Race at Portland International Raceway in Portland, OR. He started last on the field and finished third in class and on the podium. He is also an award-winning motorsports journalist, editor, publisher, corporate executive, and board member of the Oregon Mini Society.
