  • (1888PressRelease) August 21, 2015 - Grand Rapids, MI - The movie "Our Beautiful Secret" to air on PBS August 23 at 3:00 p.m.. More information can be found at www.OurBeautifulSecretMovie.com.

The Michigan-made movie combines documentary footage and interviews with dramatized re-enactments of portions of Jonathan Peavey's life. Peavey was born with cerebral palsy, and has faced numerous physical and medical challenges, and "Our Beautiful Secret" tells the story of his life, and the family that acts as his support network.

In 1992 surgery took Jonathan's ability to walk. In 1996 a feeding tube took his ability to taste. In 2006 a tracheotomy took his voice. Each time he was given the option of surviving by giving up a physical part of himself or letting go. In each case, Jonathan chose to live. In 2010 Jonathan participated in his first marathon.

The movie is directed and produced by Grand Rapids resident Angela Peavey and it has already gained international attention. "The film has had international premieres in London, Canada, Taiwan, South Africa, and India," said Angela Peavey. "We also been featured on HBO and had a theatrical run. I'm pleased that the world is opening their views on the subject matter that's portrayed in the film."

The scope of "Our Beautiful Secret" is much broader than film viewings, "we have written educational programming that compliments the film for school children around the world," said Angela Peavey. "Some of the countries we've given programming too people with disabilities are treated like third-class citizens; it's powerful to educate."

Nearly 1 and 5 people in the United States live with a disability, or 19% of the population (source US Census 2010: http://1.usa.gov/1yfsJ2k). "We started the film by telling an individuals story, but there are so many other 'Jonathan's' out there who's story resonates with the film," said Angela Peavey. "'Our Beautiful Secret' is about overcoming all odds when society says you can't, and to promote inclusiveness in communities that people are created in God's image, gifted and capable of making a valuable contribution."
