  • (1888PressRelease) September 28, 2011 - Mumbai, India: Process Analytics Division of Mettler-Toledo India announced the publication of a white paper entitled "Improving Water System Performance - Continuous Real-Time TOC Measurements", discussing the importance of rapid, continuous and reliable TOC (Total Organic Carbon) measurement and control for real time critical water release in Pharmaceutical and Biotech manufacturing processes.

    India is having the most number of USFDA approved pharmaceutical companies outside US and more are aspiring to get USFDA approval. Water being the most widely used excipients in Pharmaceutical and Biotech manufacturing processes, USFDA mandates monitoring of TOC as specified in the monographs of the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and in the European Pharmacopoeia (EP) for Purified Water (PW) and Water for Injection (WFI), as well as Highly Purified Water (HPW). The USFDA's Process Analytical Technology (PAT) initiative promotes the use of real-time measurements with the objective of ensuring good product quality. The source water used for the production of Purified Water and WFI is drinking water as indicated in the major pharmacopeia. Potable water quality can vary seasonally according to climatic changes and municipal treatment strategies, which results in varying TOC concentrations. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, organics are a contaminant to be controlled as they are a food source for bacteria in the water purification system."
