  • Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) February 13, 2019 - Three industry experts from Matrix New World Engineering (Matrix) have been asked to present at the Fifteenth Annual Environmental Professionals of Arizona (EPAZ) conference on March 6th-7th, 2019, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tempe, AZ. Dr. Laurie LaPat-Polasko, Vice President and National Director of Remediation, Ms. Georgia Waters, Senior Project Hydrogeologist, and Mr. Nathan Miller, AZ Operations Manager and Supervising Modeler/Hydrologist of Matrix will present at the conference, formerly known as the HazWaste Society. The Society was formed in 1986 to address the environmental study, evaluation, and control of hazardous wastes generated in AZ.

Each Matrix expert will present on current industry focus points and research within their respective field of study. Dr. LaPat-Polasko will discuss “What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You” - the harmful truth of Microbial Pathogens in Drinking Water. Jointly, Dr. LaPat-Polasko and Ms. Waters will speak to “Field-Scale Evaluation of In Situ Biodegradation of 1,4-Dioxane Using Bioaugmentation,” based on a recent research effort on which they collaborated. The presentation, co-written with colleagues from UCLA and Microbial Insights, highlights a study, which evaluated 1,4-dioxane biodegradation in groundwater. Senior Modeler Nathan Miller will present “Coupled Model Calibration Using PEST and Multiple Observation Groups”, sharing a groundwater flow model calibration that was approved by representatives of the state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as the basis for a contaminant fate and transport model for a Superfund site in AZ. In addition, Dr. LaPat-Polasko has agreed to be a judge for the Student Poster Competition at the convention.

“We are proud to have three of our industry experts speaking at the Annual Environmental Professionals of Arizona conference,” said Jayne Warne, PE, President. “Their knowledge is key to understanding how the work being done relative to the environment will have tremendous impact on future generations.”

Known throughout the U.S. and worldwide for her work developing innovative solutions to address water and soil contamination issues, Dr. LaPat-Polasko has a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Maryland, a M.S. and Engineers Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Biology from Chatham University. She studied microbial pathogens around the world, combining her knowledge of biology, environmental engineering, and microbiology to develop and design innovative “bioremediation” approaches to clean up contaminated sites, creating a green, cost-effective method to degrade diverse contaminants, such as chlorinated solvents, explosives, fuel compounds, and emerging contaminants. Dr. LaPat-Polasko used qPCR to determine the source of a Naegleria fowleri impact in a drinking water source in the Phoenix, AZ area. Her 27 years of experience as a technical consultant, project manager, and chief science officer for efforts involving groundwater and soil remediation and wastewater treatment combined with her knowledge of microbiology and civil engineering, result in cost-effective remediation solutions for surface water, groundwater, soil, and sediments impacted by organic and inorganic compounds. In 2018, she received the GOLD International Stevie Award for Women in Business, Woman of the Year – Technology, and was selected as Outstanding Business Woman of the Year – 2018 by the Phoenix Business Journal for her community leadership, professional accomplishments, and personal achievements.

Ms. Waters is a Registered Geologist with nearly 30 years of professional experience in the hydrogeological and environmental remediation services industry. Her experience includes oversight of drilling, installation, and testing of groundwater production wells, monitor wells, and soil vapor extraction wells, oversight of underground storage tank (UST) excavations, performance of site characterizations, and environmental site assessments. Ms. Waters assists with reports, development of conceptual site models, permit applications, and compliance activities. Ms. Waters uses her extensive knowledge of the industry to assist with marketing and business development.

Mr. Miller is a recognized expert in numerical groundwater flow modeling and Manager of Matrix New World Engineering’s Arizona Team with more than twenty years of professional experience. A recognized hydrologist and modeler with expert-level proficiency in the use of U.S. Geological Survey MODFLOW groundwater modeling software and the library of packages available, Mr. Miller regularly represents clients before the Arizona Department of Water Resources and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. before the such as the streamflow routing package for stream-aquifer interactions, Mr. Miller is a well-known hydrologist and modeler, respected in his field and regularly requested to represent clients before the Arizona Department of Water Resources and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. Mr. Miller also manages the successful completion of permits issued by these agencies.
