  • Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) December 21, 2021 - Matrix New World Engineering (Matrix) is part of a multidisciplinary consulting team led by Arcadis that worked with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to develop the ‘Financial District and Seaport Climate Resilience Master Plan.’ The Seaport/FIDI neighborhood’s financial power and historical assets are of international significance, and those resources are highly vulnerable to climate change. The NYCEDC Master Plan identifies solutions for mitigating the risks of climate change, while remaining sensitive to the unique character of the District and its historical/natural resources.

According to CBS New York, "By 2100, sea level could rise by 6 feet. If nothing is done, the neighborhood could experience daily tidal flooding. The city says the plan will protect against sea level rise, coastal storms, and freshwater flooding. It's no secret that we need to act now in order to combat climate change, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation and mayor's office are working together to do just that.”

The Seaport/FIDI neighborhood presents substantial challenges for resiliency design, given its status as NYC’s oldest neighborhood and its focus upon active maritime uses. Matrix was challenged by the design team to forecast the vulnerability of its marine assets over the next century and participate in the development of solutions. Matrix’s expertise in marine engineering, infrastructure evaluation, regulatory constraints and local NYC knowledge provided valuable input into that effort.

Matrix is proud to have contributed to the Seaport/FIDI resiliency planning effort and is grateful to NYCEDC and Arcadis for the opportunity. Matrix’s involvement in the project is part of a larger climate change resiliency portfolio that is national in scope. In NYC, they are contributing substantially to the resiliency efforts being undertaken throughout Lower Manhattan, Hunts Point and numerous public and private assets. Matrix believes that climate change is real and among the greatest challenges that mankind has faced.

Jayne Warne, PE, President, states, “Climate change is a reality for our planet. New York City is a microcosm of what can happen if plans are not executed in a timely fashion. Matrix looks forward to having a significant impact, with their team partners, on structuring and implementing resiliency plans that will endure for generations to come.”
