  • Phoenix-Mesa, AZ (1888PressRelease) April 23, 2021 - Following the University of Arizona (UArizona) Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences’ celebrated El Día del Agua (El Día) “Water Day” Student Symposium held virtually March 31 – April 1, 2021 in Tucson, Arizona, Matrix New World Engineering (Matrix) delivered an award to graduate student Sunyi Yuan for his presentation titled, “Modeling atmospheric dispersion of pesticide particles in Yuma county”. Traditionally held in-person, the 2020 and 2021 El Día conferences moved to a virtual platform due to the global pandemic.

    Matrix’s annual sponsorship of the past two virtual El Día conferences has been in the form of a $400 award for, “Outstanding Oral Presentation” to a student selected by a panel of judges. Matrix was pleased to be asked to present the award to Mr. Yuan during the Zoom Awards Ceremony on April 5, 2021. Matrix Senior Project Hydrogeologist and UArizona alum, Georgia Waters (M.S. Hydrology, ’88) had the pleasure of announcing Mr. Yuan’s award for which he expressed delight and gratitude.

    The El Día del Agua y la Atmósfera annual conference features the latest student research in hydrology and atmospheric sciences. Since its inception in 1991, this symposium has given students a platform to present their research to the University community, private sector, colleagues and fellow alumni. El Día is an integral part of Earth Week 2021, a week-long showcase celebrating collaboration across departments, laboratories, schools, and colleges on the University of Arizona campus.     Recognizing the important role the UArizona Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences serves in educating entry-level environmental scientists, Matrix has sponsored and attended El Día annual conferences since 2017.
