  • Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) February 11, 2014 - Vocalist Nancy Scimone will present "Mating Call - The Dating Life of Birds and Bees" in a Friday, February 14 concert at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, DC. The concert will be presented inside the Conservatory and is free.

Scimone's program pairs songs about birds and bees with commentary on their habitat, mating practices and calls. The commentary, while scientifically accurate, is user-friendly and not overly technical for those with a personal interest in birds.

The one and a half hour performance includes the wistful "Skylark," the romance-infused "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," the sultry "Habanera" from Carmen," "Le Colibri" (Hummingbird) and Scimone's original "Mating Call," a perky waltz with bird call lyrics. She's enlisted two musicians familiar to Washington jazz lovers: guitarist Steve Herberman and bassist Victor Dvoskin.

A multi-talented and seasoned vocalist, Scimone has performed from New York to the Midwest in a career that includes opera, art song, jazz and inspirational themes. Most recently she appeared in the John F. Kennedy Center's 2013 Messiah sing along as the soprano soloist. Scimone says that she created this program to "celebrate the joy that birds give us, to herald their noble place in our lives and to learn from their innate wisdom."

The concert begins at 3:00 PM. Reservations are not required, and there is no entrance fee to either the concert or the inside gardens. The address is 100 Maryland Ave., SW, Washington, DC 20024, at the intersection of Maryland Ave. and First St. SW. The public contact number is (202) 225-8333 and the website is www.usbg.gov Metro bus and subway access. Limited street parking. Wheelchair access.
