Putnam Cottage/Knapp Tavern, preserved by the Putnam Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution since 1906, was the site of Union No. 5's original charter on November 18, 1763 and is considered "the cradle of Masonry in Greenwich."

"This is a very important occasion for both the Masonic community and the towns of Stamford and Greenwich," states Domenic Corbo, 250th Anniversary Committee Chairman. "This charter marked the coming of Masonry to the southwestern corner of Connecticut. We are honored to be able to celebrate two-and-a-half centuries of the Masonic Order in Fairfield County."

The charter of Union Lodge No. 5 authorized the Lodge to be located in "the towns of Stamford, Horseneck (Greenwich) and towns adjacent." The earliest records of the Lodge show that many officers were from Greenwich such as the tavern keeper Captain Israel Knapp, Jabez Fitch, Knapp's son-in-law and Elkanah Mead. Knapp is the son of Joshua Knapp, one of the 27 original proprietors of Greenwich.

General George Washington, a Mason and first American President, visited Greenwich and Knapp Tavern frequently. In his diary, Washington reflected on the beauty he witnessed during his travels: "the superb landscape which is to be seen from the meeting house in Greenwich is a rich regalia." The Tavern was also utilized during the American Revolution, by Washington's second-in-command General Israel Putnam, also a Mason.
