  • (1888PressRelease) July 01, 2011 - Markus Lüpertz, one of Germany’s most outstanding artists, would sum up his creed with the words: “Ingenuity – that’s me.” The artist likes being provocative, with pronouncements such as: “Artists helped God create the world.” This “Painter Prince” acquired a name for himself as a painter, graphic artist and sculptor far beyond the borders of Germany.

Born in Reichenberg, now Liberec in the Czech Republic, the painter and sculptor Markus Lüpertz is among a post-war generation of German artists who had breathed new life into Expressionism – together with Penck, Immendorf and Baselitz. One characteristic feature of his work is his amazing versatility and quest for balance between abstract and representational and between form and colour. As a painter, his favourite genre is the landscape, while in his sculptures the key focus is on the human figure.

On 25 June, the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague will open a comprehensive retrospective exhibition of Markus Lüpertz. Lüpertz will be present, too. The Chief Executive Officer of RWE AG, Dr. Jürgen Großmann, will give a welcoming address. The title of the exhibition is: Markus Lüpertz – In ‘t God’lijk Licht/In the Divine Light. In this exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum, which is a listed building in The Hague and one of the top three buildings in the Netherlands, the artist’s oeuvre will be presented in nine thematically arranged groups, giving viewers some new ways of looking at the artist.

The exhibition is thematically linked to the museum itself, which was built by H.P. Berlage in the 1930s. One outstanding feature of Berlage’s architecture is that it seeks to emphasise the special status of fine art. The exhibition is sponsored by ESSENT.
