  • Richmond-Petersburg, VA (1888PressRelease) October 24, 2013 - Lucy Corr Village, the Chesterfield-based assisted living and long-term care community, has begun an employee-based wellness program called Working on Wellness, or "WOW". Currently, nursing ranks as a profession with one of the highest obesity rates - a trend Lucy Corr Village is attempting to reverse with WOW. The program features an HCA Education Series on the fourth Wednesday of each month, which begins with a "Lunch and Learn" - an informational session geared towards teaching employees how to eat healthier and exercise. The Lunch and Learn includes a $3.00 voucher towards the purchase of the WOW salad bar provided to all that attend.

Recent studies performed at the University of Maryland's School of Nursing found nursing to have one of the highest rates of obese or overweight workers, with 55% of 2,103 female nurses surveyed classified as obese. An additional survey performed by the UNLV School of Nursing, found that almost 54% of 4,980 randomly selected registered nurse responders were overweight or obese. Long hours, not enough sleep, high levels of stress and little to no access to healthy foods are among the factors of this epidemic.

The Working on Wellness initiative has already seen success with TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) started on April 4 at Lucy Corr Village. In order to combat the high rates of stress nurses experience on a daily basis, WOW recently launched its Yoga series, which is held every Wednesday beginning at 3:45pm.

Lucy Corr Village is also now corporate partners with the YMCA of Greater Richmond. The "Y" will waive the joining fee for employees of Lucy Corr, a value of $60 for an individual membership and $120 for a family membership.
