  • Nassau-Suffolk, NY (1888PressRelease) September 16, 2013 - Be Real, the first episode of Long Island Girl Talk, will premiere on Saturday, September 21, at Love Jones Café in Baldwin, NY, from 12 pm to 3 pm, as part of the first fundraising event for the Long Island Girl Talk (LIGT) program. Be Real includes an anti-girl-on-girl bullying music video written and produced by the program participants, teen girls ranging in age from 6 to 16 from the Uniondale School District.

Prior to showing of Be Real, Westbury resident, educator and author of Creating Smart Schools, Dr. Judith Kronin will speak on The Importance of Creating Smart Schools. Next, attendees will participate in a power networking session followed by the showcase featuring the episode and formal introduction of its teen creators. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children, available in advance and at the door.

Over ten girls gathered for LIGT's Cycle One on Saturday morning at the John J. Byrne Community Center in Uniondale to learn how to produce, research, write, film, edit and cast, direct and star in their television show about women's issues in their communities. The girls developed individual commentaries and a panel to inform the public about girl-on-girl bullying. They created a music video segment under the guidance of renowned hip hop producer, Johnny Juice Rosado, and independent filmmaker Marc Lyons. Future episodes will address equal pay for women, teen body image, and teen self-esteem.

LIGT is sponsored by the Women's Fund of Long Island (WFLI), Energetic Enterprises Youth Community Studio, and the John J. Byrne Community Center. Anyone interested in getting involved as a participant in Cycle Two as a sponsor or volunteer should visit www.byrnecenter.com/Long-Island-Girl-Talk. In addition, the general public may also support the organization through the RUSHCARD-Russell Simmons-Sponsored, Charity campaign at www.byrnecenter.com/RiseToThrive-challenge.

The Women's Fund of Long Island invests in the power of women and the dreams of girls. Our vision is a world of justice and opportunity for women and girls, where we serve at the primary decision makers about issues that affect us, have equal voices in the political process, are paid equitably for work, and live in homes and communities without fear of violence.
