  • Salinas, CA (1888PressRelease) February 13, 2014 - Local Salinas Author, Gabriel Garcia debuted his children's eBook, The Small Prickly Red Cactus, exclusively to major eBook distributors including Amazon, Apple iBooks and Barnes and Noble recently and he accomplished this using technology, online self-publishing tools and determination.

Like many first-time authors, Garcia had been disappointed by the lack of response from traditional publishing agents and publishing houses for his manuscript submissions for children's stories. While some agencies responded with praise for his recent manuscript for The Small Prickly Red Cactus, the recurring response was that the book would not merit the effort and money necessary to produce and market it in the competitive landscape of children's books offerings.

Garcia did not give up there; he joined the growing majority of independent authors or "indies" as they are referred to in the online world of self-publishing and published his eBook himself. A simple Google search on "self-publishing an eBook" provided Garcia with the starting point for researching the guidelines and steps necessary to compile his manuscript into a product that can now be downloaded and read with popular eBook readers on devices such as the Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook, Apple iPad or even directly on a smartphone equipped with an appropriate eBook reader application.

"Technology is definitely making it easier for first-time authors to become entrepreneurs and with eBook distributors such as Amazon, Apple and Smashwords offering a greater percentage of eBook sales royalties than a traditional publisher would, I can see why," says Garcia.

"With a bit of determination and perseverance a first-time author can choose to format their manuscripts for eBooks using word processing software such as Microsoft Word and the popular writing program known as Scrivener. If the author also has creative talents such as drawing skills, programs like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator can help create the images for the eBook's digital cover and accompanying artwork for the book as well. Once the book is properly formatted and checked with some of the free online available software programs such as Calibre and others, it provides the proper formats that online eBook distributors require such as an .mobi or .epub file format for online submission," Garcia says.

Garcia plans to utilize not only his writing skills but also his marketing, graphic design and social media background to promote The Small Prickly Red Cactus through traditional outlets, social media channels and through the website: http://www.TheSmallPricklyRedCactus.com.
