  • Baltimore, MD (1888PressRelease) April 18, 2013 - My Girlfriend's House, Inc., a Capitol Heights, MD-based nonprofit organization, partnered with their long time corporate sponsor and retail giant Macy's to host the Bra Shoppe Experience last Saturday, April 13th. The Bra Shoppe Experience is an initiative that supports the needs of inner city teen girls by providing them with bras and underwear.

"What 16 year old girl wouldn't love the opportunity to get new bras and underwear?" My Girlfriend's House Executive Director Veronica Eyenga laughed. "We have girls who don't have parents, girls who live with dad only, and girls who simply lack the complete awareness needed when purchasing their first real bra or getting the right underclothes to support their growing bodies. So, you can see how important it is for us to dedicate a day like this to our girls. They deserve it."

Macy's has been a corporate sponsor for My Girlfriend's House for the past three years and their contribution stretches well beyond the typical monetary support. This year My Girlfriend's House, including a few partnering organizations, brought 37 girls from throughout the region to the Marlow Heights' location of the department store for the Bra Shoppe Experience. The teens, who currently reside in group homes, homeless shelters, and low income communities, enjoyed a day of information as Macy's opened up their doors and enlisted the help of their top apparel specialists to speak with the girls on the importance of proper undergarment support. After the workshop, Macy's personnel and volunteers helped the girls with bra fittings and finding the perfect undergarments. The day ended with a huge pizza party as the girls celebrated a successful shopping experience that provided them with the items they need the most.

"I had a great time!" thirteen-year-old Ezinne announced. "This is the second year I've attended and if it wasn't for My Girlfriend's House and Macy's I don't know where I would get the bra and underwear I need. I'm so thankful."

Pastor Patrice Shepard of Lydia's House, a mentoring program in Washington, DC, was one of the groups invited by My Girlfriend's House to participate in the bra shopping experience. "Today has been amazing. My girls couldn't believe they were able to walk through Macy's and get the items they need…for free!" Pastor Shepard shared. "We work with My Girlfriend's House throughout the year and they never cease to amaze me with the wonderful things they're doing for girls in the community. It means so much to the girls in my program to be here today."

"We're always happy to receive support from My Girlfriend's House," Wessita McKinley from Sisters United, a Prince George's County organization that also provides mentoring services said. "When Veronica asked us to join her today, I knew how much our girls and their parents would appreciate it. The opportunities they received today are one in a million. We can't thank My Girlfriend's House and Macy's enough."

The Bra Shoppe Experience is a bi-annual event that supports the mission of My Girlfriend's House, which is to empower girls and women to become better.
