  • Pittsburgh, PA (1888PressRelease) June 28, 2013 - Currently, there are more slaves in the world than at any other time in history. Women, men and children are being held against their will and forced to work for the benefit and greed of other people. Human Trafficking, as defined by the United Nations, refers to all acts related to the recruitment, transport, sale or purchase of individuals through force, fraud or other coercive means for the purpose of economic exploitation. 2 million women and children are victims of human trafficking every year, according to the Department of State.

The event, titled Close to Home, being held on July 23rd,, 2013 at Carlow University, will raise funds, awareness, and action around the issue of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. The event is intended to inspire hope around a serious subject. The evening will feature several speakers, including Barbara Amaya. Barbara is a trafficking survivor, author and speaker and an advocate for human trafficking victims and survivors. Guests will mingle over wine and appetizers, in addition to having the opportunity to win raffle prizes from local Pittsburgh companies. The theme of the evening will be centered around "hope."

Proceeds from the campaign will help the Project to End Human Trafficking based in Pittsburgh, and the Polaris Project, a leading organization in the global fight against Human Trafficking and modern-day slavery.

Diana said, "This is an event about Hope. I want to raise awareness about this horrible crime and encourage people to become involved. We are trying to save lives here."

Tickets will be sold through the date of the event. Monetary donations are also being accepted for those who are unable to attend. More information can be found here: http://cficrowdfundingincubator.com/project/close-home
