- Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon, NJ (1888PressRelease) May 22, 2025 - In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month, Left Turn Village (L.T.V.) is proud to announce its second annual Mental Health Edition “Freedom Rhymer” Poetry Contest and Open Mic event. This impactful evening will take place on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 7:00 PM EDT at Suite Metuchen in Downtown Metuchen, NJ, offering a vital platform for creative expression and open dialogue around mental well-being.
The "Freedom Rhymer" contest will feature five selected poets, each given five minutes to perform original works centered on mental health themes. Following the competition, the stage will open to audience members, inviting them to share poetry or spoken word related to mental health.
“The pervasive stigma surrounding mental health often compels individuals to suffer in silence,” says Dr. Tyree Oredein, owner of L.T.V. and the visionary behind Freedom Rhymers. “Last year, the overwhelming gratitude we received for providing a safe space to discuss mental health was a significant catalyst for bringing this event back. We are committed to continuing to foster open dialogue, particularly within communities of color where the stigma can be profoundly overwhelming.”
Charnell Neptune Darby, owner of C. Neptune Darby Consulting Services Inc., returns as an event partner, echoing Dr. Oredein’s sentiment. “We’re participating in Freedom Rhymers because poetry gives voice to the silent battles of mental health,” says Neptune Darby. “ The art of storytelling holds immense power, connecting both writers and listeners in a unique way.”
Beyond the "Freedom Rhymer" title, all contestants will receive a special gift from event sponsor, CHULO Underwear. General admission tickets are available for $15, with an online participation option for $10. Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite at https://freedomrhymers2025.eventbrite.com. This event promises to be an invaluable opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, connect with community, amplify diverse voices, and celebrate the transformative power of poetry.
Left Turn Village is a public health and social justice company dedicated to creating safer, inclusive, and culturally competent spaces for marginalized groups through a wide array of programming. Under the L.T.V. umbrella, "Freedom Rhymers" is a consortium of poets and verbal artists whose name is inspired by the historic "Freedom Riders" of the Black Civil Rights Movement. These artists are called upon to voice their lived experiences, promoting understanding and change.
