  • (1888PressRelease) March 22, 2013 - Leadership Jefferson County and West Metro Fire Rescue Training Center made a difference in the lives of special needs students last week.

Recruits from four different fire departments learned building construction through a hands-on project which also gives back to a special community. The recruits' project, sponsored and coordinated by Leadership Jefferson County (LJC), was building a shed for the experiential and memorial garden at the Fletcher Miller Special Needs School. The school, located at 200 South Kipling in Lakewood, is for special needs students in grades K-12.

In two days, the recruits were able to learn building construction through the hands on project of building the shed. The shed is 10' x 12' designed for garden tools and equipment. It took the 25 recruits ten hours to construct the shed. All materials were funded by Leadership Jefferson County.

Leadership Jefferson County started in 1985 and was formed by the Board of Directors of what is today The West Chamber. The purpose of Leadership Jefferson County is reflected in its goals: identify and develop community leaders; acquaint these leaders with community needs and issues and focus on alternative solutions; challenge leaders, as a group, to greater community involvement; and educate leaders about all aspects of the community. Each year, the program identifies 25-30 emerging leaders living or working in the Jefferson County area and puts them in direct contact with the people and institutions that shape the community.

As Steve Burkholder, founder of the City of Lakewood and former Mayor, explains: "Leadership Jefferson County provides the opportunities for individuals to learn and participate in the various public and private organizations that affect their quality of life."
