  • (1888PressRelease) November 09, 2010 - The U.S. Arctic Research Commission (USARC) recommended steps that the United States government should take to invigorate oil spill research in the United States, and specifically emphasized the growing need for more effective spill prevention and response in the Arctic region.

Officials within Knight Investments LLC were ready to show support for these new steps and vocalized as a compliance hub that new legislation supported this.

"The most important thing we can do is support our environment. The environment must be taken care of, and projects that come forth supporting that are top in our priority. It is great for projects that seek to promote things like the USARC steps, because our regulatory mechanisms look more favorably on things like that." said an underwriting spokesman for Knight Investments LLC.

Reports have shown that the risk of oil spills will likely increase if the anticipated increase in offshore energy exploration and production is realized. The challenges of such exploration are compounded by the projected growth of Arctic shipping. These challenges are further enforced by the exploration that is occurring further offshore, in deeper waters, and in a marine environment characterized by a changing climate (and concomitant sea ice conditions).

The promise of a rigorous and coordinated national research program on oil spills, made in the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, after the Exxon Valdez disaster, has fallen short. Knight Officials have come to agree with the USARC, and stated that more steps needed to be taken.

The current spill-related disaster in the Gulf of Mexico makes reports from the USARC all the more timely and should result in greater consideration of the USARC's proposed actions. The USARC has worked closely with the Interagency Coordinating Committee on Oil Pollution Research (ICCOPR), stakeholders, and the public to develop ideas on this subject that we have integrated into their reports.

Knight Officials stated that there support would remain constant for the protection of the environment.
