  • (1888PressRelease) January 03, 2013 - On New Year's Day, Jeffery M. Leving, of the Law Offices of Jeffery M. Leving, Ltd., took part in a White House conference call to discuss the Bi-Partisan Tax Agreement and the so-called "fiscal cliff."

The Senate passed the Bi-Partisan Tax Agreement on New Year's Eve. It was the first time in 20 years that the Congress had acted in a bi-partisan fashion to vote for a substantial increase in revenue.

The White House Office of Public Engagement invited Mr. Leving, a member of President Obama's National Finance Committee and chairman of the Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood, to participate in the discussion of this "make-or-break moment for the middle class." Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President, Gene Sperling, Director of the National Economic Council, and Jon Carson of the White House Office of Public Engagement also participated.

The President, in his official statement, has pointed out that "neither Democrats nor Republicans got everything they wanted," but the Agreement does in fact make good on President Obama's core campaign promise to require the wealthiest two percent of Americans to "pay their fair share" of income taxes while shielding 98 percent of families and 97 percent of small businesses from any income tax increase.

The Senate bill, which was approved by the House on New Year's Day, is expected to raise $620 billion in revenue. It will also permanently extend middle-class tax cuts while returning to the progressive tax code on the wealthy that characterized the Clinton era.

The bill will also prevent 2 million people from losing their unemployment insurance benefits by extending those benefits through the end of 2013 as an emergency measure.

As President Obama said, "There's more work to do to reduce our deficits, and I'm willing to do it… And as we address our ongoing fiscal challenges, I will continue to fight every day on behalf of the middle class and all those fighting to get into the middle class to forge an economy that grows from the middle out, not from the top down."

For many Americans, the successful passage of the bill is a huge relief in a time of economic anxiety. Businesses and ordinary citizens can look to the New Year with a greater sense of confidence.

That includes many fathers who are desperate to secure child custody and visitation rights with their children, a cause which is Mr. Leving's passion.
