SHANGHAI, China - italki, the leading social network for language learning, has announced it has closed an angel financing round, and launched a new version of its website. The company raised its second angel round from international investors who were drawn by the company's growing track record of successful language learning lessons.

"Over the past few years we have built a strong ecosystem for language learners to find online teachers," says Kevin Chen, Co-Founder of italki. "Our new financing will help us expand internationally, as part of our mission to help more people become fluent in foreign languages".

Over 900,000 users from more than 200 countries already use italki to learn a foreign language. italki is looking to build on this growing community with improved peer-to-peer learning tools and mobile apps. italki is also working on partnerships with major language publishers, including Oxford University Press. Oxford University Press offers the Oxford Online Placement Test, which is available for purchase through the italki website. italki users can take the online test and display their scores as a badge on their profiles.

"We are thrilled that italki has completed its financing round," says Board Director William Bao Bean. "The demand for language learning on the web and on mobile is enormous, and italki is at the forefront of bringing social language learning to consumers."

italki's social learning and peer-based approach has attracted thousands of paying students and freelance teachers to the website. Each month, italki's teaching platform handles thousands of scheduling requests, online classes, payment transactions, and reputation assessment for teachers and students.

The latest version of the italki website focuses on helping students find the right teacher to suit their individual needs. The website now differentiates between professional teachers, informal community tutors, and free language exchange partners. italki's range of services give students the freedom to choose the best learning option to suit their individual needs. Teachers on italki are able to build personal reputations, handle international transactions, and earn money from paying students in other countries.

"Most people don't know how fast you can learn with a one-on-one teacher. People also don't realize how affordable and convenient online classes can be." says Yongyue Jiang, Co-Founder of italki. "For people who don't have time to travel to a language school, or can't find a language teacher in their area, an online teacher from italki is the best choice to learn a language."
