ISO Creates New Migration Limits for Finger Paints with Amendment 2 to ISO 8124-3:2010

  • (1888PressRelease) December 11, 2018 - The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published amendment 2 to ISO 8124-3:2010 - Safety of toys - Part 3: Migration of certain elements.

    The updated standard considered special exposure conditions for finger paints and has expanded the number of toy material categories from two to three. The previous two categories remain unchanged:

    • Toy material other than modeling clay and finger paint
    • Modelling clay

    The new category is for finger paint, which has completely new migration levels:
    • Strengthened migration limits for six elements:
    o Antimony (Sb) – 10 mg/kg
    o Arsenic (As) – 10 mg/kg
    o Cadmium (Cd) – 15 mg/kg
    o Lead (Pb) – 25 mg/kg
    o Mercury (Hg) – 10 mg/kg
    o Selenium (Se) – 50 mg/kg
    • Less stringent migration limit for barium (Ba) – 350 mg/kg
    • Chromium – no change – 25 mg/kg

    The amendment was published in September 2018.
