Irving Mayor Declares Roller Derby Week Dallas Derby Devils Host Women's Roller Derby Playoffs in Irving

  • Dallas, TX (1888PressRelease) September 09, 2015 - Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne is welcoming the roller derby community to her city with a proclamation declaring Sept. 7-13, 2015 "Roller Derby Week" in the City of Irving. Ten of the top women's flat track roller derby leagues in the world will compete for the sport's top honors at the Irving Convention Center Sept. 11-13 in the 2015 International Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Division 1 Playoffs. The Dallas Derby Devils were selected through a competitive bid process to host one of the seven WFTDA tournaments this year.

    Marking its 10th year of pushing the sport's athleticism and competition to new heights, the International WFTDA Playoffs and Championships bring together the most talented, highly trained skaters and teams from WFTDA member leagues. Whether participating on the track, cheering in the stands or watching online, WFTDA tournaments provide everyone who loves roller derby an opportunity to witness the most anticipated match-ups of the year.

    The competitors in Irving include teams from Australia, Canada, Sweden and the United States. They will meet for a weekend of hard-hitting, fast-paced competition as they strive to finish in the top three and advance to the WFTDA Championships for a shot at taking home the Hydra trophy and the title of WFTDA Champions.

The other Division 1 Playoffs will be held Sept. 4-6 in Tucson, Arizona; Sept. 18-20 in Jacksonville, Florida; and Oct. 2-4 in Omaha, Nebraska. The WFTDA Championships will take place Nov. 6-8 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. All tournaments will also be covered live by WFTDA's online broadcast channel, WFTDA.tv and the final day of the WFTDA Championships Nov. 8 will be carried on ESPN3.
