  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) January 29, 2014 - For millions, gaining weight is just as difficult, if not more difficult as losing it. But, today, with a unique cookbook, Creative Calories and Recipes for Weight Gain, those struggling to add pounds now have access to a new tool to aid them in their struggle to achieve a healthier body weight.

"While the current focus is on the obesity epidemic, weight loss as a result of medical conditions such as Cancer, Aging, Depression, Anxiety, ADD/ADHD, OCD, Growth Hormone Deficiency, Anorexia, Cystic Fibrosis, Parkinson's Disease or Post OP is a serious health concern," said LaurieAnn Scher, registered dietitian, certified diabetic educator and co-author of the new book. "Serious diseases cause many patients to lose too much weight and the struggle to add calories has a direct impact on the ability to recover. We hope our book will be a resource for those battling this little recognized problem."

Creative Calories and Recipes for Weight Gain is more than just a cookbook. It is a valuable resource containing more than 50 recipes from distinguished chefs of leading restaurants across the United States and high calorie favorites from the authors' families and friends. Tips on boosting calories, keeping food preparation new and interesting, and heart healthy substitutes are all included for successful weight gain. Secrets for increasing appetite and food intake are highlighted, along with important information to help readers understand the relationship between appetite, eating, and weight gain.

Creative Calories and Recipes for Weight Gain is the result of the passion of a mother whose child lost excessive weight due to a struggle with anxiety and the knowledge and experience of two registered dietitians who realize that there is an under-acknowledged population dealing with malnutrition and/or life altering weight loss. All three of the authors have learned through different work and life experiences that being underweight and struggling to maintain or gain weight can be just as, if not more, physically and emotionally difficult than losing weight.

According to co-author and registered dietitian at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Melanie Katrinak, "Malnutrition is easily ignored until it gets to a very dangerous point. Over the years I have treated many patients in the hospital who have lost significant weight due to physical and/or psychological illness. I always wished I had a more comprehensive resource to help patients with weight maintenance or gain, so the opportunity to collaborate on this much needed resource was very important and exciting to me."
