  • (1888PressRelease) November 08, 2014 - Dr. Gutierrez is the medical director and president of the World Stem Cells Clinic in Cancun, Mexico. The clinic was established in 2010 and treats numerous conditions including autism, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, chronic kidney disease, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Dr. Gutierrez Shares a Patient's Stem cell Treatment Journey
Barb is a 57-year-old woman suffering with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This condition causes an individual to experience extreme shortness of breath with nearly no exertion whatsoever. Barb reached a point to where she was unable to care for herself. She even became short of breath just rising from her bed, she had to stop to take a break halfway between her bedroom and the living room, she was having problems showering, and could not cook for herself anymore. She required 2 liters of oxygen per minute all day long. Barb had already had all the typical treatments for COPD including bronchial dilators, which only gave her minimal relief from her symptoms.

    COPD is Progressive
Because COPD is a progressive condition, Barb's physicians were recommending that she have a lung transplant. They were encouraging her to go to Boston to be part of a clinical trial there. Barb knew that this clinical trial procedure was an extremely painful one and that the survival rate was minimal. Patients only had a 50 percent survival rate, for a period of 5 years.

Barb's son found the World Stem Cells Clinic website and contacted the facility. The facility follows a very specific process -completely free of charge- to determine if a patient is a good candidate for a stem cell procedure. The only patients who receive treatment at the clinic are those who have a good chance of a positive outcome.

Barb Receives Treatment at the World Stem Cells Clinic
It was determined that Barb was a good candidate for treatment. She came down to Cancun and underwent a 5-day treatment, which offered promising results. The doctors caring for Barb also identified some problems with her knees, completely unrelated to her COPD, that were also addressed with stem cells during her visit.

Dr. Gutierrez reported that 24-hours after her stem-cell infusion, Barb's respiratory function tests improved by 30 percent. Now, Barb did not need a wheelchair or oxygen, she was able to walk in and out of the clinic on her own.

Stem Cell Treatments are Autologous, No Donor Cells Needed
There are no donor cells, which means there is no risk of rejection. The treatments performed at the World Stem Cells Clinic use the patient's own repair mechanisms. These repair stem cells are, in a sense, reprogrammed to address the condition the patient suffers from. Once reprogrammed, these cells are returned to the patient directly into the affected organ or tissue.

Dr. Gutierrez mentioned that it has been 8 months since Barb's treatment and she continues doing well. He continues, stating that although Barb will not be running a marathon any time soon, she can live her everyday life without worrying about shortness of breath.

Barb's Physicians' Reaction to Her Improvement
Barb's physicians were most likely upset that she did not undergo the clinical trial they recommended. In the end, they told her that they did not know what caused her improvement, saying they had probably misdiagnosed her in the first place. Today, Barb is a stem cell advocate and remains active by appearing on local television shows and performing radio interviews.

The World Stem Cells Clinic is a Self-Funded Research Facility
Ultimately, the World Stem Cells Clinic is a research facility; however, Dr. Gutierrez states that they began treating patients because they fund the research themselves.

    Branching Out
Dr. Gutierrez states that their mission is to improve the lives of as many people as they can. He knows that to do so they need to branch out to train and certify other physicians. His goal is to have World Stem Cells Clinics located all over the world so patients will not have to travel as far for treatment. He is currently consulting with a group in Europe that is interested in working with the World Stem Cells Clinic to advance regenerative medicine.

Regenerative Medicine not to Replace Medical Specialists
Some specialists voice concerns that regenerative medicine will eliminate the need for procedures like orthopedic surgeries. Dr. Gutierrez states that this is not the case. Regenerative medicine will not replace specialists; it is just about modernizing the treatments in each specific field. In fact, the World Stem Cells Clinic works with numerous specialists. Dr. Gutierrez states that regenerative medicine will touch every field of medicine He believes that in the very near future we will look at procedures done today as barbaric.

    Stem Cell Harvesting
The World Stems Cells Clinic does not use embryonic cells; the clinic treats each patient with his/her own cells. They program these cells to address the problem the patient is experiencing.

    Stem Cell Harvesting Methods
    - From fat - A special micro liposuction technique harvests the stem cells without breaking them.
    - Bone marrow - Basically, a blood draw from bone marrow.
    - Peripheral blood - An actual blood draw can be used to obtain stem cells.

3D Biological Printing on the Horizon.
Dr. Gutierrez affirms that orthopedic surgeons have been using stem cells to scaffold the inside of joints; He states that this is a precursor to 3D biological printing.
