The CerviLenz® device is used to measure vaginal cervical length in pregnant women. Cervical length measurements are important during pregnancy because the baby is at high risk of an early delivery if the cervix shortens too soon. Recent research has shown that vaginal progesterone treatment started mid-pregnancy for pregnant women with a short cervix reduces the rate of premature birth by 45% and improves infant outcomes.

Prematurity is a global epidemic. There are nearly 13 million premature births worldwide every year, and over 1 million of those babies do not survive. Others face long hospitalizations and may suffer developmental delays or lifelong disabilities, such as blindness, cerebral palsy, and respiratory disease. In the U.S. alone, prematurity results in $26.2 billion in healthcare and related costs - to say nothing of the emotional toll on families.

Interplex Medical has extensive experience producing a wide range of minimally invasive medical devices. Cervilenz Inc. selected Interplex Medical to work with the company founders to finalize the design of its signature CerviLenz® device with a goal of making it easy to manufacture. The companies worked together to assemble a group of obstetricians, midwives, and maternal-fetal medicine specialists from around the United States to validate and test design concepts. Rapid prototyping that allowed extensive user input and other collaborative techniques were key to supporting successful design work by Interplex's engineers.

"Interplex Medical is thrilled to be manufacturing a device that can help pregnant women and babies," said Al Hoffman, Director of Business Development North America for Interplex Industries. "This project with Cervilenz Inc. brought out the best in our engineers, challenging them to bring art and science together in a cost-effective design. All parts are medical grade polycarbonate, and the device is entirely press fit. It's an honor to help introduce the CerviLenz® device to the international market at Medica."

"Doctors and midwives appreciate CerviLenz because its concept is so simple yet its design is so sophisticated," said Dean Koch, President and CEO of Cervilenz Inc. "We enjoyed working with the Interplex team to help design an elegant device that brings tremendous clinical value to obstetrics."
