  • (1888PressRelease) August 19, 2014 - Associazione Italiana di Metallurgia - AIM will host EUROCORR 2014, the 364th event of the EFC-European Federation of Corrosion, which will be held in Pisa, Italy, from 8 - 12 September 2014.

This premier event on Corrosion will return to the same Latin land - Italy - where Pliny the Elder for the first time coined the phrase "ferrum corrumpitur".

Scope of the Congress is to present the state-of-the-art in the fields of corrosion and protection of materials, both from a technical-scientific as well as from a practical application perspective, starting from those used in the past to the ones destined for modern industry. The event is meant to foster the transfer of information and experiences among researches and operators in the fields of corrosion, and to benefit all from information, collaboration and common enrichment.

The main theme of EUROCORR 2014 will be "Improving materials durability: from cultural heritage to industrial applications" and it will aim at asserting the critical role of corrosion science, technology and engineering in extending the life of materials.

Belzona's Technical Services Engineer, Kyle Flanagan, will present on the latest innovation in flange corrosion management. The recently formulated Belzona 3411 (Encapsulating Membrane) is a hybrid polymer coating designed to encapsulate any shape, size or configuration of a flanged joint to exclude moisture and prevent corrosion. This corrosion barrier can be easily cut, peeled back and then reinstated to allow access to fastenings for inspection or disassembly.

Going with the theme of the congress - to improve materials durability - next generation linings designed for high temperature immersion and spray applied linings for extreme erosion environments will also be showcased. These novel technologies can be discussed in English and Italian at the booth 21, managed by BSI srl, exclusive Belzona Distributor in Italy and a representative from the Belzona Headquarters.

    Innovation in Flange Protection
To offer an alternative solution to flange corrosion, Belzona's R&D Department created a pioneering concept. This innovative flange protective coating can be hand applied at temperatures between 15°C-60°C and cures within 1-4 hours. One of the key features of this system is its peelability, as the coating can be cut open for flange inspection and simply folded back and resealed. Its unique design ensures that further monitoring and inspection of flanged connections can be easily carried out. To view the application video visit Belzona.com/3411.

    Improved HT Immersion Protection
Development of linings designed for high temperature immersion service started in the 1970s and culminated in 2014 with the introduction of Belzona 1523 and Belzona 1593. Rubbery domains that inhibit crack propagation have been incorporated into the polymeric structure to provide increased impact resistance and flexibility, so these coatings can withstand the high temperature and pressure variations of the severe operating, maintenance and transportation conditions vessels are subject to.

According to Belzona's Chief R&D Chemist, Richard Collett, "Belzona 1523 and Belzona 1593 are the culmination of 20 years of experience in formulating high temperature linings, starting in 1994. These linings are based on a combination of several 'state of the art' technologies and I believe they are our best high temperature linings yet."

    Spray-Friendly Erosion Resistance
Belzona 1331 and Belzona 1381 are based on standard epoxy technology coupled with ground breaking filler technology, which enables these materials to be sprayed without damage to the spray equipment whilst offering superior erosion resistance to ceramic filled epoxies.

The excellent edge retention and film build-up of the polymer alloy means the material can also be used in a variety of geometries, including girth welds on pipeline internal field joints.
