  • (1888PressRelease) September 01, 2012 - Inner Metamorphosis University (I.M.U.) brings an opportunity for participants to experience flexibility, rootedness and sense of freedom through the Feldenkrais Method. Apart from the regular weekly classes every Thursday, IMU is organizing a Feldenkrais course in Chicago on "Awareness Through Movement" sequences on 15th September from 1:00pm to 6:30pm under the expert guidance of Amona, a certified Feldenkrais® Instructor. The Feldenkrais Method is a holistic or rather 'whole'-istic body centered approach which helps to reorganize one's habitual movements bringing about physical, mental and spiritual harmony.

Speaking about how a body centered healing approach can have calming effect on one's mind, Dr Moshe Feldenkrais says, "There is little doubt in my mind that the motor function, and perhaps the muscles themselves, are part and parcel of our higher functions. This is not true only of those higher functions like singing, painting and loving, which are impossible without muscular activity, but also of thinking, recalling, remembering and feeling." Furthermore he adds, "The advantage of approaching the unity of mental and muscular life through the body lies in the fact that the muscle expression is simpler because it is concrete and easier to locate. It is also incomparably easier to make a person aware of what is happening in the body, therefore the body approach yields faster and more direct results. On acting on the significant parts of the body, such as the eyes, the neck, the breath, or the pelvis, it is easy to effect striking changes of mood on the spot."

There are two modalities through which the Feldenkrais Method is practiced: Awareness Through Movement (ATM) and Functional Integration (FI).

Awareness Through Movement, commonly known as the ATM is a group technique which was developed by Dr Feldenkrais so that maximum number of people can be benefited by this holistic method. The students lie on their backs on the floor and are asked become fully aware themselves, comparing the right with the left side of the body, noticing the quality of contact to the floor, the quality of breath and so on. The instructor then gives gentle verbal guidance to carry out a set of directed movements. These movements can be termed as 'awareness in action' which helps one to increase kinaesthetic sensitivity making them a self-regulatory individual.

Functional Integration [FI] is individual and custom made for specific personal needs. It is very beneficial for people who need to address injury or discomfort. This modality is a hands-on mostly non-verbal approach. Most beneficial is Functional Integration which triggers fast changes along with ATM class, which offer tools for self-exploration and self-learning.

The group and individual Feldenkrais sessions are also available at the Inner Metamorphosis University, Chicago. There is an on-going ATM Feldenkrais class with a drop-in option every Thursdays 5:00pm-6:00pm. The occasional 5.5 hour long Feldenkrais course offers a great opportunity to address a main topic-line in greater detail, and allow for questions and some hands-on demonstrations. One can also book individual sessions with Amona.
