India's first Gender Equality Convergence Center to be launched in Kerala

  • (1888PressRelease) February 23, 2016 - Kozhikode : The Park will bring together, state, academia and civil society in a common platform on gender issues. The park will be physically located in a 24-acre campus at Kozhikode, Kerala.

    The high profile event will be dedicated by the Honorable President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee in the presence of Justice P Sathasivam, Governor of Kerala, Shri Oommen Chandy ,Chief Minister of Kerala, , , along with a few cabinet ministers. Dr Rebecca Reichmann Tavares, Representative, UN Women for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan, will also attend the event.

    According Dr. PTM Sunish, CEO, The Gender Park said, "The center is touted to be the country's first such large-scale initiative in creating an environment to share global knowledge and experiences in reducing gender inequalities. Given the proactivity of the Government of Kerala in launching effective models of development, it now seeks to be the pioneer in India with regards to gender policy , research and inclusion through its groundbreaking Gender Park".

    A dedicated Gender Institute focusing on research, learning, and capacity development at the Gender Park will be a central component of the Gender Park in supporting the efforts of the State and Centre in ensuring an inclusive society. The institute in Gender Park will cover issues pertaining to all three genders as per the 2015 gender and transgender policies of the State Government. The objective of the institute is to link knowledge creation to policy making through a multidisciplinary research and learning process, eventually expected to transition into the first Gender University in India.

    In partnership with UN Women, the Kerala government hosted the first edition of India's pioneering global conference on gender equality last November. The summit titled 'International Conference on Gender Equality-ICGE-1' that witnessed the participation of distinguished thought leaders, social activists, research scholars and policymakers from the country and around the world. The outcome of the research will be backed by the Social Development Model of Kerala that can be replicated across states for it to eventually become a sustainable and holistic development model for India and the world.

    The center aims to create a space for research and academia on gender development & equality to create theory and data that can be used to inform government policy and practice. The Institute at the Gender Park will work towards collating national and international knowledge, efforts and activities to ensure that there will be research and learning.
