"Sally" Murphy at the dedication of a commemorative street sign in honor of her exceptional volunteerism. "Sally Murphy Way" will be dedicated on Friday, March 9 at 11 a.m. in the area of the St. Patrick's Day parade viewing stand located on Pratt Street between Charles and Light Street.

    As a volunteer, Miss Murphy's generosity is unrivaled. A 1951 graduate of IND, she volunteered five days a week. "Generations of young Catholic women have been helped by Miss Murphy's tireless efforts to make a superior academic and religious education available to all," says Dr. Mary Funke, President of IND. "Her reputation at IND is legendary."

    Miss Murphy was twice elected National President of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Inc. and also served as Maryland State Board President. She was a key advocate for Baltimore's St. Patrick's Day parade, which not only celebrated her Irish heritage, but that of thousands of citizens in Maryland. In 1999, she served as the parade's first female grand marshal. Miss Murphy also donated her time and talents to the Irish Charities of Maryland.

    Miss Murphy worked for city government for 44 years and was one of its best-known employees. She died on December 7, 2010.

    The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians will dedicate Sally Murphy Way on Friday, March 9 at 11 a.m. in the area of the St. Patrick's Day Parade viewing stand located on Pratt Street between Charles and Light Streets.
