  • (1888PressRelease) September 05, 2010 - While calling people all across the globe to realize the hazard which world is facing due to hunger crisis Dr. Homoud appealed for supporting the 1 Billion Hunger Project initiated by UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for involving common people to this mass movement of saving the world from hunger and its pros and cons. It is for the first time in human civilization history that the number of people ridden by hunger will exceed one billion by this year. It is the time for global citizens who have enough food to eat to take action to help feed the billion people on the planet who go to bed hungry each night, said Dr. Homoud.

With one billion people now living in chronic hunger, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched a global petition called "1billionhungry project" urging politicians to make international hunger reduction goals their priority. Beyond the goal of getting massive people awareness about chronic hunger, the main goal of the petition is to get 1 million signatures. These signatures will be presented to the representatives of each state attending the World Food Day at the UN headquarters in New York by the end of October 2010. This scope is to put pressure on the participating states to work together and assist FAO in its struggle against chronic hunger in the world. "It is indeed ironic to note that more than 1 billion people go to bed hungry every day, we the people of this world should believe that it is our privilege and responsibility to make a difference in the lives of others less fortunate who are starving around the globe" said Dr. Homoud.

In the contemporary world where 1.02 billion people are hungry and almost 16,000 children losing their battles to live every day, nothing can be more serious issue than to deal with world hunger. The pace with which the human civilization is developing is somewhat contradicting its core and basic values- the right to feed is the most important right of every individual and the hunger ridden people are our fellow human being- and by this virtue they deserves to be fed under any adverse circumstances. Dr. Homoud urged people to sing this petition and join this movement from core of their hearts and to feel the pain, agony and suffering of our fellow human beings who are deprived of their basic right- that is food. He asked "doesn't it sounds sarcastic when we talk of man reaching to Mars and at the same time several children are dying out of starvation. How can we console us amid such grim reality which unfortunately exists in a world of plenty? I don't how to say but I have no words to explain my sorrow and pain on this issue which leaves me to ponder upon the pace of development the world has achieved and at the same time forgetting our brothers and sister who are suffering for no fault of theirs".

For several decades the world has produced enough food to meet the needs of its entire people. Over and over again governments have committed themselves in international meetings to reducing hunger and cutting childhood mortality. Yet there are now over 1 billion hungry people and billions suffer from malnutrition, including at least 2 billion from mineral and vitamin deficiencies- and the numbers are growing. This shows that there is something very wrong. Some billion peoples in the world suffer from chronic hunger and such large-scale hunger is not only unprecedented but also should be intolerable in our world of plenty. In a world in which enough food exists to feed every man, woman and child, we need to do far better with sincere and honest efforts be it politically, economically, scientifically or logistically, said Dr. Homoud. He went on saying "There is enough food in the world to feed everyone, so why in the 21st century we have over a billion people going to bed hungry every night? People have a fundamental right to be free from hunger. It is up to all of us to make decisions at a political, economic, spiritual and personal level to ensure that pressure is brought to bear on governments and decision-makers to tackle this issue effectively."

"It is the time to unite against hunger. It is the time to rethink on the strategies to fight the menace which hunger is creating. FAO deserves appreciation from all corners for coming out with such noble idea of 1 Billion hunger petition project to appeal common people to join this movement, which is indeed demand of the time as world cannot afford any delay for tackling this hazard" said Dr. Homoud. He urged people to support this movement for ultimate advantage and survival of the mankind. IIMSAM Middle East Office with participation of other NGO's of the region are committed to support this project of FAO with all possible support. " we will ensure that we spread this message of FAO to the maximum of people in Middle East region particularly, we shall ensure that people join hands and unite on this concern to fight for this cause and to express solidarity to the fellow human beings who are victim of this menace", said Dr. Homoud.

Dr. Homoud asserted "nevertheless we have achieved some vital progress in our efforts towards MDGs accomplishment but report indicates that we are slow in moving towards the goal and we have to remember that time is very short and with only 5 years left under our domain, we have to pick up the pace to find out the ways in which we can expect to achieve MDGs under the given deadline. The global financial crisis being faced by world is yet to witness some more repercussions and it could prevent us from achieving our goal thus world has to prepare itself for such situation which might plunge millions more in menace of poverty and hunger thus only aggravating the present situation". It is important for the world leaders to rethink on their strategy for supporting the MDGs, urged Dr. Homoud. "We must not allow the current global financial and the food crisis, divert us from the people and governments that the Millennium Development Goals were created for, the poor" said Dr. Homoud.

Reaffirming his faith of UN strategy in fighting hunger related issues Dr. Naseer said "we need that political will and delivery on financial commitments by governments as agreed in several conferences and submits while brainstorming on how to feed the world by 2050". He further said "there is hope in every crisis, and I believe that together we will transform this world to a hunger free world". IIMSAM believes that promise in the Millennium Development Goal to reduce hunger and poverty by half by the year 2015 can only be redeemed by serious thinking, planning and action. Dr. Naseer further added "when we look the other side, there are impending challenges for the mankind. The global challenge of climate change has to be kept in mind while formulating policies for countering the menace of global food crisis". The nature of crisis asks for global and concerted efforts on the part of world bodies, governments and civil society groups to tackle it.
