  • (1888PressRelease) December 16, 2017 - The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has issued Amendment 1 to IEC 61347-1:2015 – Lamp controlgear – Part1: General and safety requirements. Published on September 29, 2017, the amendment introduces several changes, including:

    • A new definition for surge protective devices (SPD) – “devices that are intended to limit transient over voltages and divert surge currents, and which contain at least one nonlinear component”
    • Expansion in scope – extended to include d.c.1000V, as opposed to d.c.250V in the old version
    • In the marking section:
    1. A new symbol is added for SPD – control gear with an integrated SPD requiring connection to earth shall be marked with the protective earth symbol according to IEC 60417-5019: 2006-08
    2. The “symbol indicating the kind of control gear providing SELV” is replaced
    3. For item u), the second bulleted list item, remark that SELV-circuits are excluded. In table 2, add the voltage for d.c.
    4. A new item x) has been added, Indication: “Integrated SPD” for CLASS I application, if an over voltage protective device is integrated in the control gear
    • In the testing section:
    1. For the terminal part – clarification that the tests referred to in clauses 14 & 15 of IEC 60598-1 are only for integral terminals. If the terminal is not an integral type, then it must comply with the requirements of the relevant IEC standard, if any apply.
Aspects of use not covered by the respective standard must satisfy the additional relevant requirements of standard IEC 61347-1

Terminals complying with the requirements of their own standard, and used in accordance with their intended use, need only meet the requirements of the standard where there are no requirements in the "terminals" standard. Example terminal standards are IEC 60947-7-4, IEC 60838-2-2 and IEC 60998 (all parts)
    2. Moisture resistance and insulation – The over voltage protective device (SPD) is disconnected if it complies with IEC 61643-11 when conducting the insulation and electric strength test. This will be beneficial to manufacturers
    3. Fault conditions – Clause 14.5 has the following new text added to it, “Short circuit across or, if applicable, interruption of components for SPDs (e.g. MOV, VDR or spare gaps components). Only one component at a time shall be short circuited (or interrupted)”
    4. Creepage distances and clearances - additional text relating to the insulation properties of printed circuit board over a metallic substrate (metal core printed circuit board – MCPCB). It is only to be considered as a single level of insulation (basic or supplementary)

In addition to this, tables 8, 9, 10 and 11, and their applications have been replaced by a new table.

These changes represent a major content change to IEC 61347-1:2015 and should be of interest to manufacturers of luminaires.
