  • San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) May 15, 2012 - The ocean holds 97 percent of the Earth's water, is responsible for 50 to 70 percent of our oxygen and is the number one source of protein for more than one billion people . For these reasons and so many more, Rubio's has been inspired by the ocean for more than 30 years. Today, it's proud to announce a month-long celebration leading up to World Oceans Day 2012 on June 8. Kicking off its "Stand Up for the Ocean" festivities, Rubio's is inviting elementary and middle school classrooms to get involved in its World Oceans Day poster contest.

Rubio's is asking classes in schools throughout California, Colorado and Utah to show their artistic talent and commitment to the ocean by designing a poster of original artwork that shows how they stand up for the world's oceans. Semi-finalist and grand prize posters will be displayed in restaurants and on the Rubio's website, and the six classrooms selected as the grand prize winners will be awarded a "Kids Achievement Award" for each student, redeemable for one free kids meal or a catered lunch by Rubio's for up to 35 students.

"At Rubio's, we are committed to doing our part to stand up for the ocean year round," said Ralph Rubio, founder of Rubio's. "In addition to sourcing certified sustainable seafood whenever possible, we recycle plastic and glass bottles in nearly 50 percent of our restaurants, support ocean friendly causes, use eco-friendly plates and to-go containers, and continue to find more ways to give back to the ocean every year. We're thrilled to launch this month-long celebration to team up with the community and to raise awareness about how everyone can help preserve the ocean. "

Rubio's dedication to creating craveable seafood recipes began when Ralph Rubio took his first bite of a fish taco in Mexico more than three decades ago. Realizing he had tasted something truly unique, he began to develop his own recipe. The creation of The Original Fish Taco® recipe became the basis for everything Rubio's stands for today: memorable and complex flavors in chef-crafted recipes that feature the freshest, highest quality ingredients.

For Rubio's World Oceans Day poster contest, classrooms are encouraged to get creative and use a variety of tools, including watercolor, pen and ink, crayon, chalk and markers. Posters should be submitted to each school's local area Rubio's with a completed release form no later than Friday, June 1. Rubio's district managers will then select one semi-finalist poster from each location to move on to the next round of voting and be displayed in restaurants. Posters will be judged on messaging, creativity, originality and artistic quality. On June 8, World Oceans Day, Rubio's will select and announce the six grand prize classrooms. Official contest rules can be found at: http://rubios.com/WorldOceansDay.

Rubio's will continue its month-long World Oceans Day celebration with a Facebook sweepstakes to raise funds for an ocean-centric organization, a giveaway of free re-usable tote bags, and a beach cleanup and party in San Diego on Saturday, June 9. Fans and friends should stay tuned for more details.
