  • (1888PressRelease) September 02, 2011 - Las Vegas, NV -- In late 2010, Botox ® was approved by the FDA to treat chronic migraine headaches in adults. The FDA announced that Botox ® injections have been shown to be effective in the prevention of migraines, which are debilitating headaches that cause intense pulsing or throbbing pain and affect about 12% of Americans. "Chronic migraine is one of the most disabling forms of headache," Russell Katz, MD, of the FDA, says in a news release. "Patients with chronic migraine experience a headache more than 14 days of the month. This condition can greatly affect family, work, and social life, so it is important to have a variety of effective treatment options available."

More recently, on August 24, 2011, the FDA approved Botox ® for the treatment of adult urinary incontinence, or to treat overactive bladder control, in patients with neurological problems. The FDA has said "Botox ® can be injected into the bladder to treat those who lose bladder control because of damage to the nervous system, through conditions such as multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury." "Allergan will try to gain approval to market Botox ® to a broader population of patients with overactive bladder," Allergan's CEO David Pyott reported earlier this month.

As uses for Botox ® continue to expand, Botox ® sales have skyrocketed in 2011. Allergan announced 2Q net income increases of 3%, primarily due to "worldwide revenue from the wrinkle treatment Botox ® [climbing] 16% to $418 million." Given the continued popularity of Botox ® as the number one minimally invasive aesthetic medicine treatment (5.4 million Botox ® procedures were preformed in 2010), and coupled with the increasing number of uses for this product, physicians expertly trained in the administration of Botox ® can capitalize on this ever growing market.

    The IAPAM Training Difference

Botox ® training is the central component of the IAPAM's Aesthetic Medicine Symposium (http://www.aestheticmedicinesymposium.com) which offers comprehensive instruction on the top 5 minimally invasive procedures: Botox ® injection, soft tissue fillers; chemical peels, medical microdermabrasion and laser hair removal. The key to success in the aesthetic industry is not performing one procedures, but combining treatments giving your patients the results they desire. Moreover, "physicians now see the importance in not having Botox ® training in an unclean hotel room, and are choosing the IAPAM's aesthetic medicine symposium since its done in a clean medical practice which gives them the opportunity to learn proper Botox ® injection technique," says Jeff Russell, Executive Director of the IAPAM (http://www.iapam.com).

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Linder, emphasizes that "any effective training program should provide tips on how to give an effective consultation with each patient. This should include a thorough evaluation of the individual characteristics of the face, a comprehensive discussion with the patient regarding risks and benefits, and most importantly, how to appropriately set and manage realistic patient expectations." Fellow IAPAM faculty member, dermatologist Dr. Toni C. Stockton, instructs registrants on the latest technologies and products, from Botox ® to Dysport ®. She also educates physicians on dealing with possible adverse events due to the procedure.
