  • (1888PressRelease) October 15, 2010 - Recent headlines and figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) emphasise the critical importance of managing risk and assessing the safety of HPHT operations. According to an article recently published by Food & Water Watch, the oil industry is not yet ready "to deal with a sub sea explosion in deep water". This statement is based on the fact that so far, no risk for such an event has been presumed and thus, no technology or emergency plans for capping a well in such an incident have been developed.

By the end of September discussions evolved about whether oil drilling companies should be allowed to start deepwater drilling in the North Sea. Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food & Water Watch says "The simple fact is that they do not have the capping mechanisms in place and should not be allowed to drill without detailed emergency contingency plans." These concerns urge oil drilling companies to learn more about the issues of health and safety during their HPHT operations and to train their staff on how to guarantee a healthy and safe working environment.

This year's Oil & Gas IQ's HPHT Wells Summit, taking place in Aberdeen on 24 - 25 November 2010 will address this topic in detail offering different sessions focusing on HPHT safety. Participants will be trained on emergency response planning, critical safety factors for HPHT operations, and legal and insurance issues. Delegates will not only be trained on these issues but they also have the opportunity to ask questions in an interactive panel debate including a Question and Answer session.

During the sessions, experts will give insights into current government concerns and will offer solutions and information on how to deal with them based on their experience. Key speakers and panelists include Grant Moody, HM Principal Inspector of Health & Safety at HSE, Jan Burgess from CMS Cameron McKenna, John Munningstomes, Senior Risk Engineer at Upstream, Marsh and Andrew McHardy, Well Examiner at Total & Independent Consultant.

Another opportunity to discuss current risks and how to approach them is the HPHT industry breakfast with the HSE on Thursday, 25 November 2010. During this breakfast, Grant Moody, HM Principal Inspector of Health & Safety will deliver a brief presentation on 'Challenging wells in the UKCS from a regulator's perspective'.

Considering the governmental pressure imposed on oil drilling companies with regard to health and safety concerns for HPHT operations, the HPHT Wells Summit offers a great overview of the fundamental risks entailed by High Pressure High Temperature wells and ways to overcome these concerns. Industry experts will share their experiences and offer delegates the opportunity to discuss these issues during interactive sessions. It is a great way to learn more about HPHT safety and at the same time exchange experiences face to face with industry peers.

HPHT Wells Summit 2010 presents a unique conference format and mixes presentations, panel discussions, roundtables and workshops to ensure that you are able to learn first-hand from the practical experience shared amongst both expert speakers and the wider delegate audience.
