  • (1888PressRelease) May 28, 2014 - In what has become a mecca for new talent, another artist from Toronto has emerged, poised to continue the northern uprising and introduce the world to Dopamine: A Vivid Dream, the debut album from rapper Millz. Signed to BBE Records (J Dilla, DJ Jazzy Jeff, will.i.am) and managed by Nova Music Group (Glenn Lewis, 80 Empire, and other yet to be announced emerging artists), Millz has already received high praise from industry insiders on his upcoming debut. Dopamine: A Vivid Dream will be available on June 2, 2014.

The son of a basketball coach, Millz was a young star in the making growing up playing alongside 2013 NBA #1 draft pick Anthony Bennett (Cleveland Cavaliers) and projected 2014 #1 pick Andrew Wiggins, but music was what truly inspired him. His dad introduced him to the music of the Notorious B.I.G., 2pac, Snoop Dogg, Zapp & Roger Troutman, and Tony Toni Tone prompting Millz to give up basketball and follow his passion towards a career in the music industry. The result is Dopamine: A Vivid Dream, Millz's highly anticipated debut on BBE Records.

Millz explains, "Dopamine is a chemical released in your brain when you do things that feel good. I created this album wanting to be people's dopamine. I want to touch parts of people's minds that haven't been touched before. The subtitle is more of the real title for the album. The concept of the set takes place in Toronto over one night. I essentially paint a picture of the events that took place. And that's the "Vivid Dream"."

Mixed in its entirety by award winning performing producer Slakah the Beatchild (Drake, Divine Brown, Art of Fresh), Dopamine: A Vivid Dream features production from Slakah as well as a slew of beatsmiths on the come up (including Millz himself on "Slow Sex") and marries Millz's honest, seductive word play with melodic synths and electro drums.

"Working on the track Rap Sessions with Slak, brought out something in my voice - more power. I don't hold back on these songs, so I hope the messages get through and touch people."

    About Millz:
At age seventeen, Ryan Jamaal Brooks aka Millz moved to the St. James Town neighbourhood of Toronto, an area known for its high crime rate and drug trafficking. "When I first moved down to the inner city neighbourhood in Toronto, straightaway I had to learn how to box." Remembers Millz. His upbringing immediately became an issue for some local St. James Town residents. "I'd tell them what area of Toronto I was from and they'd look at me differently, like I thought I was better or something. I had a couple problems and got into fights with people down there who felt like I didn't belong. But I got to integrate into that situation. It changed me."

Clearly it was a change for the better. Now, 4 years later, the 21 year old rapper/producer is signed to BBE Records (J Dilla, DJ Jazzy Jeff, will.i.am) and ready to drop his debut album Dopamine: A Vivid Dream on June 2, 2014. "Getting signed to BBE was an unexpected blessing. The day I got the call was just like any other day at my homies crib chillin'. At first, I didn't take it all in, But I knew I was only making progress. It's also humbling to know that professionals respect your craft, and that my craft good enough to be credited. There are a lot of acts out there that don't get the respect they deserve."

"The things that I say in these songs are my reality. Experiences I wanted to share, including love. Love is a concept that's universal. Everybody has the capability to love, so all the tracks about girls, men can relate. Girls too can flip it and understand where I'm coming from."
