  • (1888PressRelease) January 20, 2018 - Gurugram/New Delhi :Supported and led by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and The Embassy of The Czech Republic in New Delhi, the concerts are being held to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic Relations between the Czech Republic and India. The concerts were organized in New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and Kolkata from January 12-19.

    Led by Kolkata-born conductor Debashish Chaudhuri, the orchestra consisted of 56 musicians, with this being the second time the orchestra was touring and performing in India. Earlier, in 2016 the orchestra had sold out concerts in Delhi and Kolkata. The concerts received overwhelming and unprecedented response from the audience across all the cities. Not only did these concerts provided a great platform to promote and showcase the best of Czech and European classical music to a discerning Indian audience but also an opportunity to young Indian musicians who aspire to play western classical instruments a firsthand experience of playing in a symphony orchestra.

    Besides promoting the cultural and business activities of The Czech Republic in India, the concerts also aim to support needs of underserved people in rural India. Infact, part of the proceeds from the concert in Mumbai will be used for building toilets.

    The Martinu Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the best in the Czech Republic, was established in 1920 in the city of Zlin as part of the Bata shoe making factory under the name of "Bata Symphony Orchestra". The orchestra nowadays carries the name of the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu. The orchestra’s repertoire consists of major symphonic works and also includes jazz, chanson, and popular music. It also invites guest performers and musicians from the world of classical music but from other musical genres too. Till date, the orchestra has performed in Italy, Denmark, Hungary, Croatia, Greece, Poland, Austria, Romania, Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Ukraine, and US.
