HBO Archives' The March of Time on Television(R) Series Fully Restored

  • (1888PressRelease) November 07, 2012 - HBO ArchivesŪ announced today that for the first time ever, clip licensing will now be available from the completely restored 42 episodes of the award-winning documentary series "The March of Time on Television," the groundbreaking series produced by Time Inc. nationally syndicated from 1952 to 1953.

    "This weekly television documentary series has not been available since its last telecast aired six decades ago," noted Barbara Thomas, senior vice president, HBO SportsŪ. "The series explored a wide range of issues from all around the world. Many of these topics are still very relevant today."

    Restored footage includes both story-specific footage, as well as moment-in-time scenes of everyday life in the early 1950s. "The New Congress," includes exclusive interviews with Senators John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, as well as scenic footage of Washington D.C. and the underground U.S. Capitol Subway system.
    Hours of never-before-seen outtakes are being transferred from each episode to provide an even deeper look at the people, places and events that were captured by "The March of Time" film crews.

    Period scenic shots and moment-in-time footage from such locations as Pakistan, the Middle East, India, South Korea, New Orleans, Las Vegas and Soviet-era Moscow are also now available.

    Select episodes from "The March of Time on Television" series can be seen by researchers on the HBO Archives website, allowing for instant access. Additionally, samples of other productions of "The March of Time" are also viewable online, ranging from the 1930s to the 1960s, and featuring such diverse topics as political election maneuvering, teenage girls, the football business, the oil and tobacco industries, Mormonism and iconic American cities like New York.

    With the reintroduction of "The March of Time" in 2007, HBO Archives has been re-cataloging, restoring and transferring original 35mm films to High Definition Video.
