  • (1888PressRelease) February 18, 2012 - Harthill Stud hosted a fantastic Breeders evening at Bolesworth Castle on Thursday 9th February with insightful presentations from John Newcombe VET Med MRVCS, Vanessa Wright Harthill Stud Manager and Oliver Townend, International Event Rider.

John Newcombe, one of Britain's most prominent equine stud vets, delivered a presentation on 'Why Breed?' detailing the considerations that ought be taken into account should you decide to breed either at home or at a stud. This presentation was suitable for both amateurs and experts alike, giving a suitable level of detail without over complication.

Vanessa Wright, Harthill Stud Manager, shared 20 years worth of knowledge with a presentation that focused on caring for your pregnant mare and the practical preparation for the delivery of your foal. She spoke of the importance of exercise and nutrition throughout pregnancy and some of the more practical issues to be considered leading up to foaling.

Oliver then proceeded with a passionate speech, which gave an insight into his beliefs in breeding. In his opinion as breeders we need not necessarily be set in stone as to what job the horses we are breeding will end up doing. In the interest of British Breeding as a whole he emphasised that we should be very critical on the quality of the mares that we are using to breed from with respect to temperament, soundness, and athleticism, and that across the Sports of Dressage, Showjumping and Eventing there is very much a common goal. This is to breed a 'trainable athlete' capable of a high level in any of the three disciplines specialising depending on the training regime that the horse is then put through.

The evening was hosted by Bolesworth Estate who also organise the Bolesworth Classic Showjumping and run Townend Online. It raised over £1000 in aid of Claire House Children's Hospice, a fantastic North West based charity,
