  • (1888PressRelease) February 05, 2011 - Local leading Hackney estate agents Stirling Ackroyd are delighted at news that Hackney is to gain an upmarket art house cinema by October this year.

A survey of local residents commissioned by owner Hackney Council found that 53% of local residents were in favour of a new local cinema, and local businesses backed the idea by 75%. Housed in the former Hackney Ocean music venue, the cinema brings further appeal to one of London's most sought after Boroughs. Hackney is already graced by the largest number of green spaces, an art house cinema in Dalston, the famous Hackney Empire, art galleries and museums, trendy markets and a plethora of restaurants, bars and cafes.

The Hackney Ocean opened in 2001 as a live music venue but was closed again by 2004. The building has been given a new lease of life with an agreement between the council and the Picturehouse Cinemas company. The company are the same team responsible for some of London's most loved local cinemas including Brixton's famous Ritzy. Stirling Ackroyd's Hackney Sales Manager Peter Papa was enthusiastic about the prospects for local residents:

"It's a fantastic move that we think will only benefit Hackney residents. We've watched the area transform throughout all our years here and it really has undergone a remarkable regeneration. It hasn't lost its original, quirky character - there's still that tremendously creative feel to Hackney; for example, there's the Stokefest festival in Clissold Park every year. Hackney property is just sublime; there's period Victorian houses, warehouse conversions and state of the art new build apartments. There's really been such a change since the early 1990s, the area's become more and more of a hotspot. There's now also going to be a farmer's market and a second art house cinema would be the icing on the cake."

The new cinema's predecessor the Ritzy in Brixton has been credited with helping to boost local regeneration. The cinema will have four screens, one of which will be one of the largest in the capital at 18 metres. Live streaming opera performances from New York's Met and London's Covent Garden Opera House are also in the pipeline.

"The similarities are interesting - both locations are close to artisan markets. In Hackney there is the Broadway market, in Brixton the Windrush Square. There seems to be a nice local connection as well. The cinema will be showing world independent films, and Hollywood blockbusters, but also showcasing some locally grown talent. Hackney has become the sort of place that people move right across London for now. It's now got the tube, eleven train stations and a network of frequent buses. You're still very close to the City, but there is so much green space, for example, London fields open air lido, Clissold Park, Hackney Marshes as well as another fifty seven spaces. We have some stunning Hackney property right now and the area is certainly going from strength to strength in the run up to the Olympics".
