Green Education Foundation (GEF) Wins National Grant Award for Work in Education

  • (1888PressRelease) June 26, 2012 - The Xcel Energy Foundation recently announced the recipients of over $200K in grant funding for non-profit organizations in Texas and New Mexico for work in education and the environment. Green Education Foundation (GEF) is proud to be among those selected for their reach and impact in making quality sustainability education available to youth and educators.

    "Communities that value education and the environment are healthy communities," said Riley Hill, president and CEO of Southwestern Public Service Company, an Xcel Energy company. "By supporting the nonprofits that promote these values, we hope to contribute to the overall health and prosperity of the communities we are privileged to serve."

    Through the Green Energy Challenge, GEF offers free sustainability lessons and activities related to energy conservation and the environment. This national program encourages students to make small changes their behaviors and then measure their collective impact. In doing so, lifelong habits of conservation are developed and can grow throughout communities organically.

    GEF Institute, a division of GEF, strives to empower individuals to become champions for sustainability in their office, school or community. The Institute pursues the mission of educating and training a broad audience of students, educators and employees through online sustainability courses and certificates around basic sustainability concepts, including energy. They also offer blended learning curriculum for high school schools and colleges around green building concepts, including Energy and the Built Environment. Blended learning curriculum utilizes ready to use place based audits, online content and videos, and hands on activities to make it easy for educators to integrate sustainability concepts in the classroom.
