    A woman of substance, Nilima has created wonders with her bachat gats (micro-finance groups) in the village of Paroli, Maharashtra. An inspiring woman that she is, she has single handedly guided and nurtured a movement to enable the women in the local villages near Tapovan to empower themselves through self-help groups. Prior to this, the women kept to themselves in their own small houses and rarely ventured out. She has formed 100 self-help groups with over 2,000 women in 15 villages.

    A young social worker at the age of 39, Nilima has bought about a change in financial planning of the farmers and has also helped the women of Paroli attain financial stability through micro finance business modules. The skills and training given to the women in the area of cottage industries have enabled them to make quilts and kurtas. They organize exhibitions to reach their customers and also sell their creations to many shops. Off late many hotels are ordering their special quilts. Many of these women are widows who need to support their children. By giving them the opportunity to work, they have been able to become financially independent and have also opened bank accounts.
