  • Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) September 01, 2013 - Dr. Derek Grier, Senior Pastor of Grace Church in Prince William County, Va. announced a supply drive to help families prepare for the back to school season. The church organizers recognize in today's world of high tech academics, some families struggle to keep their students equipped with the basics.

"The goal of our back to school supply drive is pretty simple. We want to provide the school supplies necessary to help students succeed," said Dr. Grier. "In today's recovering economy many families struggle to provide their students with the basic tools for academic success."

While school supplies do not necessarily guarantee success, study after study on the subject confirms that when students are well equipped, they become more engaged and eager to learn. Teachers are on the frontlines and they understand the importance of properly equipping students. According to the National School Supply and Equipment Association, during the 2012-2013 school year, teachers spent $1.6 billion out of their own pockets to make sure that their students had the proper supplies.

The suggested school supply list includes calculators, colored pencils, scissors and index cards. "These items may appear to be luxuries," said Tanisha Watson Spokesperson for Grace Church, "However in today's high tech learning environment this list really covers necessities."

The supply drive will take place on August 31, 2013 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Grace Church in Dumfries, Va. For the full list of requested supplies, visit the church website, gracechurchva.org.
