Government of Indonesia Prepares USD 20 billion for 2013 Infrastructure Development

  • (1888PressRelease) September 07, 2012 - The Government of Indonesia has prepared a fund of USD 20 billion for infrastructure development in 2013 which will be focused on the energy and transportation sector. This was stated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his speech at the opening of Asia Pasific Ministers & Regional Governors Conference on Sustainable and Inclusive Infrastructure Development 2012 (APM & RGC 2012) and Indonesia International Infrastructure Conference and Exhibition 2012 (IIICE 2012) which will be held for three days, on Tuesday (28/8) to 30 August 2012 at the Jakarta Convention Center.

    President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono explained with detail that on the transportation sector, the government plans to increase the capacity of national roads along 4.278 km which has existed today. "The government also plans to build new roads along 559 km, railways along 380 km, and 15 new airports," explained the President in his speech on the infrastructure development plan in Indonesia, which is the focus of Masterplan for the Acceleration and Expansion for Indonesia Economic Development (MP3EI).

    According to him, in the three decades, the countries in the Asia Pacific faced a number region faced problems and challenges in the field of infrastructure. This challenge, he added, has to be answered urgently given that the Asia Pacific region is currently a global growth engine. "The Asia Pacific region is projected to experience more rapid growth than any other region. In 2012 the economic growth in this region is expected to reach 4.3%. While in 2013 it is expected to reach 4.7%," he explained.

    President Yudhoyono contined, continued economic growth in the Asia Pacific region amid the global economic slowdown, should be supported by the availability of infrastructure. He further predicted the development of infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region during the next decade require funds of over 60 billion per year. "For Indonesia, in addition of being the main pillar of economic development and an important component of sustainable and equitable growth, infrastructure development is a main priority, as it is also a part of inter-regional connectivity. For that purpose I have release MP3EI. Under MP3EI as many as 135 infrastructure development projects and real sector, has started with an investment value of over Rp 490 trillion or equivalent to USD 50 billion," said President Yudhoyono.

    President Yudhoyono stressed that infrastructure development is very important and posseses strategic value as it can reduce the development gap, both among the public, or city to regional level. In addition, he also said that infrastructure development has a multiplier effect that can increase public mobility, improve connectivity, and economic activity. "Ultimately it will help open up employment in faciltating the growth of industrial sector and SMEs. Infrastructure acceleration and expansion strategy is a breakthrough to avoid middle income trap. Through this approach, we managed to avoid stagnation of development," he added.
